About Organizers
The Green Council is a non-governmental
and non-profit making organization committed to enhance the
environmental awareness and attention of industry, alerting
and educating the public about the importance of natural
environment, and promoting the image of Hong Kong as a city
that commits leadership and attention to environmental protection.
As stated in its motto -- "Conservation
Begins With Education" -- Green Council officials believe
that introducing and expanding environmental awareness and
consideration is a key to protecting the environment. In
this regard, we focus on the following six main areas: - providing environmental education and training,
- encouraging green purchasing (i.e. environmentally
preferable product/service selection and purchasing),
- promoting green (i.e. environmental and sustainable)
management concepts and practices,
- encouraging re-use and waste avoidance/reduction/recycling,
- encouraging energy conservation and promoting renewable
energy alternatives, and
- promoting sustainable development, production and
consumption.
In 2000, the first regional voluntary
scheme on environmentally preferable products certification
-- the Hong Kong Green Label Scheme (HKGLS) -- was initiated
by Green Council officials with significant support from
key business leaders. The Green Council is currently operating
two green purchasing related initiatives -- the Hong Kong
Green Label Scheme and the Cyber Green Centre [pilot-phase].
With current funding, the Cyber Green Centre will be fully
implemented
by mid-2006.
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is a leading academic
institution in the field of on product design, with particular
knowledge and expertise regarding, on environmentally preferable
products. In addition, the University has close and established
collaborations and partnerships with the local community,
including both the public and private sectors.
