As human and other forms of
life live together on this globe,
humans
have responsibilities to protect
the environment. Apart from
reducing damages to the environment,
efforts
should be made to repair the
damages that are already made.
Greening
the environment is an important
task on the environmental protection
front. With the 'Conservation
begins with Education' as an
objective,
the Green Council successfully
obtained funding from the Quality
Education Fund to carry out
the 'Joint School Organic Waste
Recycling,
Composting and Farming Programme'
last year. Seven schools were
selected from the primary and
secondary
school of Hong Kong. The most
environmental cultivation method
of utilizing
organic waste recycling was
taught to these schools.
Apart from teaching the students
the ways to make use of organic
waste recycling, composting
and farming, the children also
learn
about team spirit in collaboration,
and the appreciation of the
treasures of plant life from
the cultivating
process. They learn to value
every plant in the world, and
additionally
on greening their schools and
the community.
The 'Joint School Organic Waste
Recycling, Composting and
Farming Programme' began in April
2003.
To start with, the schools
were allocated composting
and farming
facilities. Then the students
attended training courses
to learn about
waste sorting and handling.
After the course, they visited
the
Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden
to acquire real life experience
on professional
organic waste recycling, composting
and farming. After a year's hard
work, exchange visits were arranged
among the schools, so that they
could exchange their planting
experiences and what they had
gained in the
process. All the students and
teachers felt that they had so
much to share
with each other.
All the seven school involved
in the programme achieved
outstanding results. Besides
gaining knowledge
on organic waste recycling,
composting
and farming, they had realized
the plant world had so
much to offer to humans. The
results
of
some school are of such
high quality that even the judges
were totally
surprised. Seeing the melons
and fruits growing so well
under their
own hands, and the day-to-day
waste converted to useful
organic fertilizer
is really so touching and
heartening.
