About HKGPC |
| |
The HKSAR Government pledged to develop and promote green purchasing in the government and private sectors so as to reduce waste generation and stimulate the recycling industry in December 2005. In the Policy Address 2006-07, our Chief Executive also appeals to the trade and industry sectors to protect the environment, in which green procurement methods in the operations are highly recommended. The Government suggests local private sector businesses and members to be guided and assisted in the selection, purchase and use of "green" products and services produced, offered and consumed in environmentally responsible manners without unnecessary sacrifices on quality of life or the natural environment. In his Policy Address 2009-10 and after the task force on economic challenges meeting in June 2009, the Chief Executive also announced that the Government will expand the scope of green purchasing and take the lead in making Hong Kong a green city through legislation and specific green measures. |

- Message from United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

Mr. Bas de Leeuw
Head, Integrated Resource Management
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
Sustainable Consumption and Production Branch
|
"Environmentally Green Procurement
is a key tool to promote the production and consumption
of environmentally sound products and services.
An initiative like the Hong Kong Green Purchasing
Charter (HKGPC) that supports awareness raising
and capacity building on both demand and supply
side of the market is therefore very important.
The charter will benefit not only public organisations
but also individual consumers who will see more
and more green products in the shopping malls.
Having read carefully the HKGPC mission statement
I believe Green Council is on a very promising
path to help achieving a better world."

- Message from Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce
Mr. Alex Fong
CEO, Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce |
On behalf of Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce,
I am pleased to extend my congratulations to the Green
Council for launching the Hong Kong Green Purchasing Charter.
The best way to protect the environment
is to prevent pollution at source. Green purchasing is
therefore an important practice to significantly preserve
our precious resources and minimize waste. I encourage
businesses to take environmental factors into account
in the purchasing process, as well as to make use of
their purchasing power to promote environmentally
responsible procurement by influencing the supply chain.
Wish the Hong Kong Green Purchasing
Charter every success. Let's make the world a cleaner
and better world to live.
