Green Lighting
Industry in China
China
is the world's leading manufacturer of lighting
products and holds the key to lowering the cost
of high quality, high efficiency lighting throughout
the world. As the world's most populated nation,
converting the domestic marketplace to efficient
lighting is a key element of the national sustainability
agenda and a major step in the management of national
and global emissions. It is an ambitious goal to
bring about this conversion of the domestic marketplace
and to liberate the global potential of efficient
lighting by raising quality and lowering the export
price of energy efficient lighting from China.
Hong Kong professionals from the lighting industry
and related industry sectors including product
designers, researchers, developers, producers,
marketers, suppliers, and others, need to be well
aware of and significantly involved in this endeavour
for both business and environmental gains.

How can the
Hong Kong construction materials industry best
prepare itself for effective penetration into
and participation in the mainland market? – China
Environmental Labeling Programme
On
30 March 2006, Vice Premier Zeng Pei-yan pointed
out in a speech during the 2nd International
Conference on Intelligent Green and Energy Efficient
Building & New Technologies and Products
Expo that China is becoming the world’s largest
building products and services market as a result
of the rapid urbanization, industrialization
and new rural area construction works. He stressed
that there will be a major opportunity and enormous
potential for the development and implementation
of intelligent green building and energy-efficiency
in Mainland market. This is consistent with the
strategic national policy of building an energy-efficient
and environmentally friendly society. It will
also be beneficial in terms of saving energy;
protecting natural environment; improving people’s
residential comfort levels and overall living
conditions; and realizing a harmonious balance
between construction growth and ecology. In this
regard, Hong Kong engineers, building contractors
and trades, and pertinent environmental professionals,
need to acquire knowledge and appreciation of
the trends of green building industry and energy-efficient
product as well as the related green initiatives
in both China and worldwide.

New product
design must be eco-design incorporating life
cycle and other considerations
The
electronics, electrical and home appliance industries
of Mainland China are facing significant impacts
of environmental and social issues and challenges.
These developments have significant implications
for Hong Kong businesses, manufacturers and assemblers,
especially those that already export or plan
to trade with the European Union, Japan and the
United States. As a result, companies are facing
a growing number and range of customer enquiries
regarding compliance with environmental laws
and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) issues,
and also specifically on product-related environmental
issues such as eco-design, materials savings,
energy efficiency, reduced toxicity and recyclability.
Eco-design looks at the environmental aspects
at all stages of the product development process
to design products that have the lowest environmental
impact throughout the product life cycle. Designers,
environmental engineers and other environmental
professionals can acquire or enhance relevant
knowledge and understanding through attendance
at this seminar.
